Some of the lessons are short extracts from Hugo and Balzac, so they pretty much had to include those tenses. All of these are heartily recommended as most exciting and culturally rich improvement courses! Someone who can already work with real literature may not need Assimil I heard somewhere that Using and With Ease together introduce around words.

I'm not entirely sure if this is accurate, but it certainly covers a broad range of topics, and uses all tenses extensively. Further, it's a pleasure to read. It teaches about the regions and dialects of France as well as literature and the history of the language. My favourite lesson was one where they pointed out lots of words which derived from Ancient Greek and Latin.

I agree that once you're finished with this you should be able to L-R very effectively. Using French and other Assimil courses aren't really "grammar practice" courses. The grammatical tenses are there in the notes, but the focus is various conversations and cultural bits everything from discussing various regions of France to bits of literature.

I basically "shadowed" the lessons for a while, and was pleasantly surprised when fully formed phrases started popping up from conversations. I plan to have another go through the book in some detail, there are enough meaty phrases that I'm sure I'll learn more from another pass. Also I really like the cultural bits in the book.

However if what you want specifically is practice on certain tenses, as opposed to just interesting material that contains info on the tenses in footnotes, perhaps the FSI French course or something like a Schaum's Outline Series might be better. FSI in particular is free at fsi-language-courses. I agree completely that FSI may be what you want if you are looking for drills on specific tenses. I've used the French, Spanish, and German courses, and they are all superb I did!

But I think a lot of people would be driven mad! If you are not already registered you must first register. This is such a huge help for those of us who are studying with Assimil as part of a larger program, like mass immersion. Thank you very much for this excellent deck. You are a life saver. It's clearly a copywrite infringement and a disrespect for all the people working on the book to help us to learn languages. Great work! I've just finished the Assimil basic course and I use this deck first part only to review those lessons.

I will add the second part after the "Using French" study. Some cards are too long, nevermind. Altogether this is an amazing deck and I am incredibly grateful for you to have put in the work and then made it accessible for everyone. Unfortunately no one so far has mentioned that especially in later lessons the cards become ridiculously big. I think those cards undermine the value that anki provides.

This is still an amazing effort and I have made a lot of progress, but for me the later cards diminish the quality of this otherwise almost perfect deck considerably. To me, seeing new cards in order is relevant, because I grasp better the meaning. To put the cards in order: -In the browser, sort by Tag.

This will put the cards in order by lessons. Great job! Thank you very much! Merci beacoup! This deck is currently the backbone of my French studies on Anki, I'm absolutely loving it -- thanks a lot! A question though, I want to check out that active phase option but I didn't want to mess anything up by mistake before learning its functions completely. If I type something in that field on one card, then would it create new active phase cards for the whole decks or only for that one single card?

Sorry if this is a silly question, I'm not that advanced with Anki stuff. Comment from author. Hi there, Typing something in the active phase field will only create an active phase card for that specific card. So you can choose which cards to add. If later you decide you no longer want the active phase card, just delete any characters in the active phase field and leave it blank. When you do your reviews, the duplicate active phase card will come up as "the front of this card is blank" meaning the empty active phase card is still in the deck.

There you can remove the empty cards and your deck is good again. There's quite a lot of errors in this - in th first line of the first lesson is a glaring typo. It doesn't work. It has obviously been scanned from the textbook but not checked for accuracy Comment from author. Hello and thank you for your feedback, All cards were typed by hand to correct any existing mistakes in the original text and have been repeatedly checked for accuracy. Could you please show where the glaring typo is and clarify?

This method is not complete. It still requires one vital element: your intuitive gift of learning. We will help you to learn French in much the same way as you learned English: by listening, repeating and drawing conclusions. And finally, by speaking. There is no miracle nor mystery. We have divided the course into two parts, or 'waves'. The first wave requires little effort: it is passive.

You listen, repeat and try to understand. The second wave will draw on the knowledge you have acquired, prompting you to form new sentences and to express your ideas. True, we have cheated slightly by choosing a grammatical progression that introduces the particularities of French little by little, instead of all mixed together as would be the case if you 'picked up' the language with native speakers Remember, that was how you learned English.

But even so, we have tried not to impair your natural gift by explaining everything immediately. Instead, we'll use a word or phrase once or twice before giving you a detailed explanation. In this way, you organise your knowledge after the fact rather than trying to learn through sets of rules.

Don't worry! Just relax and learn. And if you approach the course in a relaxed fashion, if you accept rather than analyse the problem of most adult learners , if you appreciate the pleasure of understanding, then you will assimilate the language naturally and in a relatively short space of time. Our apologies to the purists. We have deliberately ignored the more literary aspects of French.

Right from the start, the conversations are written 'with the ear' and are as natural as any language method can make them. They rely on everyday speech, colloquialisms and vocabulary that the visitor to France or a French-speaking country will hear all the time. After about four months of regular study, you should be able to understand normal conversations and to express yourself in everyday situations, both formal and informal.

Also, we have not attempted to cover all the grammar. We have concentrated on those elements that will allow us to achieve our aim as efficiently as possible. There are two good reasons for this. Firstly, what often deters English speakers from learning a Romance language is the seeming over-emphasis on grammatical exactitude to the detriment of expression - an emphasis not shared by the type of French speaker you will encounter in this volume.

We believe, as the great writer Rivarol said, that 'grammar is the art of lifting the difficulties out of a language; the lever must not be heavier than the burden. This book will provide you with the tools to continue your exploration of the language at your own pace. Our key rule is: do a little every day. Only through constant contact can you make the most of your natural powers of learning.

Try and set aside some time every day - even if it's only ten minutes - and make sure that you treat the course as pleasure, not work. During the first wave Lesson , you simply listen to the lessons, look at the translation and notes and repeat the text aloud.

From Lesson 50 onwards - the second wave you move into the active phase. For each new lesson. Match case Limit results 1 per page. Post on Oct 1. Category: Documents download. You have made my life ten times easier as now I don't need to refer to the book and can learn on the go in a much more fun way. Thank you for this deck!! Question: How to study this in the way Assimil proposes without messing up the sequence?

Hello, my reply to the previous comment below may be what you're looking for. I also posted a visual aid up top. There is an add-on called Advanced Previewer that will allow you to review cards from the preview window only works for Anki 2. This looks really good, footnotes and everything. But how do I start from the beginning? The cards show up in random order. Hi there, the cards start in order if you haven't done any of the cards yet and don't have any other new cards from other decks.

You can import the deck in a new profile to see. I will update the cards with a higher due number so there won't be any conflicts. Press right arrow or Enter to go the the next card in sequence. Both methods will show the cards in order and you can study at your own pace this way.

This will also mimic how Assimil is originally presented. My sincere thanks for this amazing effort!! I particularly appreciate the fact that you have used complete sentences, instead of isolated words. The notes and pictures you have included are a great bonus.

I wish that I could give you ten thumbs up! Excellent, thank you very much. I look forward to the Business French version : - Comment from author. Currently on the fence about ankifying Business French. Also, the course has many reading and writing assignments. I think that if one is advanced enough to tackle BF then splitting the lessons into chunks might give diminishing returns.

At that point, I think self-made cards is a better idea. The original text has been comprehensively revised to reflect changes in usage, vocabulary and social mores. But in some cases, mere updating was not enough. So we have added twelve entirely new lessons that follow the fortunes of a young couple in today's France. As always, when selecting language elements for new material, we have. Naturally, our choice is subjective, but is is based on usage in the media over the past decade.

Another change that you are bound to notice is the use of the single European currency, the euro, when talking about prices, rents and other monetary amounts. Although, at the time of writing, the euro is not in everyday use, we are sure that it will shortly enter the language, and we have decided to anticipate.

But one thing has not changed: the Assimil method, which relies on your natural powers of learning, a relaxed and often humorous approach and short periods of daily study. We hope you enjoy our New French with Ease. This method is not complete. It still requires one vital element: your intuitive gift of learning.
